========================================================================= THE PHILLIPS AND ASSOCIATED FAMILIES IN NEW YORK STATE 1790-1902 and FRANK G. PHILLIPS IN MONTANA 1902-1920 Volume II, by I.M. Sowa Scanned and edited from original manuscript by Richard P. Sowa Readme notes, 1/13/2008 ========================================================================= TABLE OF CONTENTS This document contains the following sections: Overview Quick Start System Requirements What's on this CD? Viewing the book Printing your own pages How to get additional copies Copyright info ========================================================================= OVERVIEW ========================================================================= This CD-ROM contains the entire text of the original book as published in hard copy by my mother, Iona May (Ingram) Sowa. There are actually two versions of the book on this CD. Both versions are readable using Adobe Acrobat Reader. The first version is in a directory called "Onefile". It is a single, 40 megabyte pdf file of the entire book The second version is in a directory called "Chapters". This second version is the same as the Onefile version, but has been broken up into smaller files, the largest of which is about 6 megabytes. Each version of the book is identical and is the complete book, so you can use whichever one you prefer. The Adobe Acrobat files were created specifically for viewing on a computer. Any or all of the pages can be printed, and depending on your printer and the paper you choose, may be of the nearly same quality and appearance as the original hard cover book. ========================================================================= QUICK START ========================================================================= You should read this entire document first. However, if you choose, you can use the the following steps to get started quickly. This should work on most computers. 1. Insert the CD in your CD-ROM Drive. 2. If you already have Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 or higher installed on your computer, skip to the next step. Otherwise, visit http://get.adobe.com/reader/ and download a free copy and install it on your computer. Then proceed to the next step. 3. You should now be able to double click on one of the pdf files in either folder and it will launch Acrobat Reader automatically. ========================================================================= SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS ========================================================================= 1. Windows 95 or later, or any computer that can read CD's and run Adobe Acrobat Reader. For optimum performance, I recommend copying the pdf file you want to view to your hard drive before trying to open it. Both directories will consume about 80 megabytes of space on your hard drive space, but performance will be much better than if you read the files from a CD. 2. To view either version of the book, you need to install Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 (or a newer version) on your computer. You can get the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader directly from Adobe's web site at http://get.adobe.com/reader/ ========================================================================= WHAT'S ON THIS CD? ========================================================================= 1. The book THE PHILLIPS AND ASSOCIATED FAMILIES OF EARLY NEW ENGLAND 1630-1810 in two versions. Both versions are the same, except the one in the folder "chapters" has been split into smaller, more manageable files. The files are in Adobe Acrobat pdf format, and can only be viewed, searched, or printed using Adobe Acrobat Reader version 4.0 or later. 2. This readme.txt file. ========================================================================= PRINTING YOUR OWN PAGES ========================================================================= To print one of the pages using Adobe Acrobat Reader, merely select File, Print, and indicate which pages you want printed. A note about paper. To get the best quality printing, I recommend using the highest quality, bright white paper you can afford. If you are curious, I used Hammermill LaserPRINT 24# paper for the hard copy of the book. ========================================================================= HOW TO GET ADDITIONAL COPIES ========================================================================= Additional copies of either the CD-ROM or hard copy of the book can be obtained from me.
